There are literally hundreds of guitar instructional courses (Guitar Lessons)offered on the Internet. We will only review the cream of the crop here. We rate all these quite high for that very reason.

This year’s review includes three Online Learning Sites: JamPlay.com, Guitar Tricks.com and Jamorama.com. These are top quality sites that are reasonably priced. As with all online guitar lessons you should make sure you have DSL, Cable Modem or other broadband hookup because the streaming videos can be bandwidth hogs. Some of these sites claim that you can access your lessons from anywhere in the world. But, in reality, it is just not possible to get any value from these type of sites with slow Internet connections. So, beware!

Our favorites are the DVD/CD/Paper Manual type of courses. They don’t require an Internet connection to access and use. And, they are not plagued with jerky bandwidth problems. The one we reviewed here is more expensive to get started with than the online courses, but if you need to stop practicing for a while, you will still have the materials and you can restart at your own convenience. Personally we just like to have something in our hands.

Toward the end of this page we review a specialty web site that is not technically a well rounded learning experience. However it is quite useful for practice purposes. 50Blues is a great site to use to download backing tracks for your practice needs (it’s a lot cheaper than hiring a band:-).

Description: “Top Dog” of the quality Online Learning sites. This one is filmed in HD with new guitar lessons each week. As of this writing, JamPlay has 24 instructors in a variety of guitar disciplines. An interesting feature that I’ve not seen elsewhere is the daily video Q&A sessions. If you join you become a member of the community and can get answers to all your questions (sometimes a video response!). All lesson “write ups” are printable. The quality of this site and it’s instructors make it the BEST CHOICE if you are looking for online instruction.

Description: The name of this product is very deceiving. Most people aren’t interested in “tricks” they want the “meat and potatoes” of instruction. But, “meat and potatoes” is what you get, despite the wimpy name! This is an excellent site which, by the way, is a pioneer in online guitar instruction. Perfect for both beginner and experienced guitar players, with over 3,000 lessons and an international team of 7 instructors. The lessons are in the form of streaming videos and tutorials. Guitar Tricks makes it easy for you to track your progress and also bookmark lessons that you want to repeat. You get to use a software metronome and guitar tuner ( which saves you money) and their famous Jam Station which simulates your playing with a full band. This is one of the best values for PC based study over the Internet! We highly recommend it!

Jamorama

Product Jamorama
Price $39 (one time charge) for online version
Or $113.95 for disks and manuals(inc shipping)
Guarantee 60 Day 100% Money Back Guarantee

Description: This is a good beginners course, and is definitely priced right (if you are buying the online version). If you already have a few years of guitar playing experience you probably won’t find much here to expand your horizons. The material downloads easily to your computer and the instruction videos are well done. If you spend the extra money for the DVDs and manuals, you may be better off buying one of the higher ranked courses. Jamorama also has two other courses that sell for $39 each (one focused on Acoustic Guitar and one on Lead Guitar techniques). They also have a Spanish language course. When all is said and done, this is a good course to get your feet wet at a very low entry price.

Description: Griff Hamlin has been teaching guitar for over 22 years and it shows. His “laid back” and confident style of teaching makes you feel like you are taking instructions from a friend. This course has 120 minutes of up close videos, and 28 jam tracks that you can play along with, ready for instant download. Before taking this course you will need to know a few chords and how to strum, but, other than that, this is basically an entry level course. This course is a “must have” if you are serious about learning to play the blues guitar or lead guitar really well, and, it’s a bargain at only $47 – that’s the cost of a night out on the town!

Description: This product is an entry level course. Those who already know how to play would probably not be satisfied with this product. That being said, it’s not really a bad value for a beginner. The 5 ebooks are well done and the bonuses are helpful for beginners (guitar tuner, metronome, etc.) The only negative comment we have is that there are no videos! These days that is almost unheard of.

SUPPLEMENTAL

50Blues

Product 50Blues
Price $37 digital download (one time charge) $59.90 for 2 CD set
Guarantee 8 Weeks 80% Money Back Guarantee
Rank
Description: This product is not really structured as a course, but, we are including it on the review page because it is very useful in improving your guitar playing skills, especially if you have hopes of playing in a band. Perhaps one of the best ways to get that smooth “fluid feel” when playing in a group is to practice, practice, and practice with a group over and over again. These blues backing tracks allow you to do that with top quality tracks on your computer. Zach Roberts has been playing and teaching guitar for over 20 years. You may have read some of his articles in “Guitar Player” magazine. This package is well done and would make a great addition to your arsenal but you should already have the basics under your belt before you buy.
